Andy was the wise old sheriff, and was indeed far ahead of the times. I remember stumbling across a few old episodes of The Andy Griffith Show a couple years back and being surprised at how progressive the show was in treatment of African Americans, transients, and outsiders in small town North Carolina. When the town would rail against the problem of the week, Andy would rise above it all with his home-spun wisdom and patience.
There's never gonna be another Andy, that's for sure.
